Here We Go Again

At Tuesday night's Planning Commission meeting, the decision was made to hold a public hearing to determine the fate of Trevi Entertainment's ability to retain a permit to provide night-time entertainment.

This all started around March of 2008. About 2 months after I was elected, in 2008, council made the decision to send it back to the Planning Commission to revoke the permit because of a variety of code violations, some relating to safety issues.

The Planning commission suspended the permit for 90 days, and a 6-month review of their compliance with code regulations and conditions of approval was set.

That 6-month review period was Tuesday night, and now it is set for a public hearing. At this public hearing, the Planning Commission will decide whether or not they will permanently revoke the permit.

Now if I were a betting woman, I'd say that if the Planning Commission revokes the permit, someone from the public or on the council will not be happy with the decision and it will be appealed, placing it squarely in the lap of the city council, again.

If you click on the title above, it will take you to the staff report from Tuesday night's meeting. There's just too much information to put in a blog, so if you want the full scoop, go to the staff report and click on Agenda Item #2.

I should point out that the staff report gives the city's perspective, not Trevi's.

Your comments??

I doubt that Daryl Hickman even read the staff report, maybe you should send it to him because he seems to have his mind made up already. How can he cast an educated vote when he keeps showing up in the paper talking about how unfair this is? I hope the rest of you will at least make an informed decision, whatever that decision ends up being. There are always two sides to the story, let's hear both sides.

My God Dear,

What does it take for the City to leave this poor man alone. If you dump him where will all those people go to work. Everyone up there on the counsel says they want to create jobs, and here you are closing down local jobs.
It sounds and looks like you guys are talking out both sides of your mouth.
Please don't let the bozo crowd win again.
We love you, because you do what is right for the people and not the city staff wants.

I certainly have not made up my mind yet, I just wanted to keep everyone informed of what's coming up. Don't worry, I'll vote my conscience, I promise.

The issues revolved around safety for the most part really. We all want more job here, and we want to keep the ones we do have. On the other hand, we don't want to turn a blind eye if a business is operating in a way that's not safe for the employees or the patrons. Can you imagine if something horrible happened there, something that we did nothing about?

So it comes down to figuring out what the best and most reasonable solution is, what makes sense.

You know, our number one job, our number one priority, is the safety of Lake Elsinore residents. Everything else is secondary. I want to make sure nothing happens to you, my neighbor, or someone's child because I made a bad decision.

In the interim, this goes to the Planning Commission first, so you are welcome to contact them and make your feelings known. Thanks for the thoughts and opinions, I really appreciate it, and I hope you all keep letting me know how you feel!

Safety is important, but so are jobs, especially now. If you shut him down there are going to be a lot of people out of a job. I know it's probably not a pleasant situation to be in, but you have to weigh the options and outcome very carefully. There must be an alternative to closing him down.

Leave Trevi alone!!! There is so little to do here in town for our kids and teenagers other then to tag fences and hang out, Trevi gives the kids a place to go that for the most part is safe. The safety issues of locked doors and unsound stages is petty. If you shut him down then the building will be just another one in LE that is unoccupied. How about focusing on the positive for a change, the decor in Trevi is beautiful, an asset to LE, the food is great, and it offers entertainment for the young and old. NOTHING else in this town does that!!!

There are alot of unsafe situations in Lake Elsinore. The question is would the ones for the Trevi be overlooked
if it was someone else or in another city? Could they worked out in a better manner?

I agree the kids need something to do, but why do they think something to do means cause trouble?

While I like the fact that there's a place like this in Elsinore where families or kids can go to bowl, play games, and have fun, there's a distinction between that and have a night club with live music where drugs and crime are prevalent. I don't believe he should be shut down completely. I just think that the night club part should not be allowed. If you have a place like that in Elsinore, you're just asking for trouble. And anyone who thinks otherwise is either fooling themselves or doesn't know what it's like to live in Elsinore. And speaking of kids having something to do... have you seen the bathrooms at Trevi? I was there once and they were disgusting and covered with graffiti carved into the mirrors, sinks, and walls. While our city officials have done a horrible job at allowing our city to prosper, Mr. Knight also appears to be a whiny bully who apparently thinks he is above the law. Let's keep perspective on this. Both sides in this fight are foolish, but in the end I only care about what is best and safe for our community, and if that means no Trevi, then so be it.

It appears that most of the city residents that have posted on here are for Trevi to remain open. Had the owner of Trevi not gone after the Council to protect his rights as a business owner I wonder if this "safety" issue would still be an issue. I agree with all that posted that LE is in horrible condition as far as amenities and growth and still wonder why the city is in this kind of shape after being an established city for much longer then the other cities around us. Perhaps the Major can answer this question. LE was a once rich and famous town where celebrities came for the hot springs and to relax and sad to say that it has desingrated for years and even when the economy was at a peak LE remained on a down hill spiral, why is that? Trevi is an asset to this town it provides family entertainment and the owner did an outstanding job of decor and planning, better then any others have done for our town for years. The Council and PD need to get off his back and let him be, we live in a controlled area where our PD want nothing more then for all of us that reside here to be locked in our homes at sundown. They don't want any kind of adult entertainment in town. This is why this town is broke, there's no where to shop and no where to have fun and we all take our tax dollars to other surrounding cities for dining, shopping and fun.

TERRY WATERS comment says it all. LE is way behind and will never catch up or grow. Everyone who lives in LE takes their money elsewhere anyways.

I love the place. My kids bowl in a league there.
I take my Mother to Trevi for the Elks club, she is 74 years old. Where do you think I can take her if they close.

While I think some people make valid points - I have lived here almost my entire life. I have watched the lot that Trevi is on go from a BMX track to KMart to then sit empty till Mr. Knight came. I think the idea is a great one - I think the facility was beautiful until the youth's lack of respect destroyed parts of it (i.e. the bathrooms) BUT I think that Mr. Knight is not the stand up man that some are making him out to be.

As silly as he may feel some of the rules are that the City or fire or police try to enforce they are the rules and just because he has the money doesn't give him a pass on them! And doesn't give him the right to try to bully people in the city or community around to get his way.

Peoples safety are a big concern - a lot of people are saying the City Council needs to let him be - you are the same people that will be attacking the council for not shutting him down if something does go wrong.

As far as the City of Lake Elsinore being behind the times - I would have to agree BUT in this councils defense this City has had some poor management of funds in the past (like 20 plus years ago) has lead to us being in this position.

These Men and Women that are on the council work their butts off - outside of their REAL jobs - to try to better the City of Lake Elsinore - If you don't like what they are doing just remember you put them there. And if you didn't vote then don't bitch.

Remember help OUR City by shopping local! You have control at helping people keep there jobs - eat at local restaurants - shop at Target or local shops - there are great jobs here but to keep them they have to have the business.

Trevi is a focused safety issue? How about the public beach on Lakeshore, now there is a uncontrolled party, drinking loud music riot waiting to happen "safety issue" in the Summer months, but although this matter has been brought to the attention of several of the new city council members the traffic and danger go ignored summer after summer.
As for shopping and dining out within the City of LE, perhaps you could provide some shopping stores that are worth my tax dollars. I myself don't really care for the quality of items at Target and Walmart and Lowes and Home Depot really only provide items for certain family needs. Where else could one shop, the outlet mall??? Now this in itself is a joke, you go there one month there's a store you like there, the next month gone. I prefer to spend my money in the other cities around us that provide great shopping for their residents and you know the store is going to be their from one month to the other, it's worth the drive!!! As for dining out well, fast food and mexican places get a bit boring and how often can one eat at the only steak house in town. Corona offers some very nice eating places all in the same place, we don't mind the drive to Corona Crossings for our entertainment.

Okay, I would like to address the issue relating to dining. We have a number of restaurants in LE, scattered on all ends of town. Saying we don't I think is unfair.

We have Ravioli's, Rusticana and Guadalajara on Main St. to name a few. We have Chili's, LoneStar, Sushi restaurants, we have Hunny's, Denny's, Ihop, the new restaurant where Arrividerci Roma's used to be, those are just some. We have restaurants to serve any number of needs.

Could we use more? Yes. But please don't say we have nothing to choose from here, we do.

As far as shopping, agreed, we need better shopping. I will not argue with you there. We have grown quite a bit in the last 5 years though. Many of the big box stores weren't here then. You may not care for Target, Home Depot or Costco, but many people, including me, do. It's wonderful to not have to drive to Temecula to purchase the old economy pack of toilet paper, pick up plants for the garden and buy some housewares.

Merry Christmas!!

Awwww yes we do have a variety of places to eat here, but what was not mentioned is the food worth your dollar? Vinces has great food, Ravoillis also great but pricey, Hunnys over priced and not that great, the new Lake House food also not so great, we have tried just about every place there is in LE these past 15 yrs and that's why we leave town for food. I love Costco for economy packs of t-paper and many other items the store has to offer, however that little something different, unique, and special for someone on your shopping list is not available in LE. I spent my Christmas money shopping other then LE i'm sorry to say, however I would love to shop within my own town if it was available but until it is I will continue to shop out of town.

RE: Mr. Knight.
Well, well, well.... Temecula pulled the plug on Mr. Knights video arcade this past November. He would not abide by the rules...ummmmm Very Interesting!

So you see, it is just not Lake Elsinore. Temecula has the same concerns...

I just wanted to say a few things about Trevi. I have had all my kids birthdays their and also a corp. lunch and bowling, that my job offered to send us on. I would have to say that I had nothing but a great time and wonderful experience. People need to get off their soap box and take a look around at what this is doing for our community and job factor in Lake Elsinore. Pleas leave the man alone.

Trevi is a wonderful place for this town I would hate to see it just down. The LE needs more places like this. Please understand how much I would love to see this city grow more than it has already, we need to be up to par with the surrounding cities. We have been around longer but yet lack the amount the surrounding cities have.
