Hey, Where's Your Hall Pass?

There is much buzz on the news and in the papers about the live web broadcast to students across the nation that will be aired by our nation's president on Tuesday.

The Lake Elsinore Unified School District School Superintendant Dr. Frank Passarella has informed me that the decision has been made to allow teachers in our district to show the broadcast if they so choose.

Teachers who plan to show the speech have been asked to notify parents. Parents can choose to have their child opt out of watching the presentation. Students opting out are to be given a chance to participate in an alternative activity.

On one side are those who -

a) feel uncomfortable with the fact that this speech has not been screened for political content

b) argue it should first be reviewed by the State Board of Education and local school boards, which, under state law, must approve the curriculum

c) feel it's inappropriate to spend taxpayer dollars for this effort.

On the other side are those who -

a) feel it's appropriate and parents should not keep their kids from listening to the president, even if the parents do not agree with his policies

b) don't feel listening to the president will prove to be damaging to students

c) argue that the message is about working hard in school, not politics

So, parents, take a peek in your child's backpack for a flyer from the school. If your child's teacher plans on showing the broadcast you will have the opportunity to either request that your child not participate, or the opportunity to talk about the speech with your child when he/she gets home from school. It's your choice.

I would imagine that since Monday is a holiday, you would have already been notified. If you have a concern, you can ask your child's teacher Tuesday before school, or call the school office.

I'm sorry but I don't understand why this is necessary. I think it's great that the president wants kids to stay in school, but i doubt that's what his message is really about. Don't we already teach this concept in our schools? Isn't that what parents and teachers are for? Something isn't adding up here.

I find it appalling that our superintendant doesn't have the guts to say this is not appropriate in our schools. And it doesn't matter who the president is to me, by the way, it's the pricipal of the matter. I don't need the federal government reaching into my kids classroom, they should be paying attention to other things that are more important like the world of hurt we're in with the economy. Good grief!

I don't see what the big deal is. At least they're giving parents the option. But thanks for the information Melissa, nice to be kept in the loop!

Show us who is presently promoting the benefits of conformity and doing ones best today in school to be better citizens tomorrow. Our President and family know first hand how toough the road of life can be and how sometimes a word of encoragement from an outside source could be a catalist to inspire youth to choose a path not considered themselves. This effort is to reach the lives of children that want to eliminate all the negative obsticles that maybe parents or friends have put up just to keep them down. Exposure as a youth is a must,CENSURE is the enemy!

And perhaps the president may even be able to teach people how to spell CATALYST.... and I hope the person who posted anonymously at 4:27 takes note.

I love how everyone made a big deal out of a nice "ra ra" speech by the President. And, yes, I do think that he has the right to speak, because the Dept. of Education was a cabinet-level position (last time i checked). Saying he can't give a pep talk to the kids would be biting the hand that feeds them.
